The 2025 Leominster Championship swiss section came to a close on Tuesday with the final two rounds being played. The top eight players then to forwards to the knockout stage, but who will make the cut…
Results: Rounds 7 and 8
Due to some long running games we played only one round for the final week of Swiss in the adult section. This saw some very competitive games with Dylan Connor (white) losing on time by a smallest of margins against Daniel Timm. John Hargeaves (white) and Steve Olrog played another close game with Steve taking the win, and the full point, and Steven Priestley battled John Preece (white) and also came away with a win.
Junior results: Rounds 7 and 8
Round 7 in the junior section saw Alex get off to a winning start against Eve, Arthur snatched a win from Lewis, a tough game between two high scoring players. Leon walked away with the full point playing black against Archie.

For our final round of junior Swiss in 2025 we had another run off decisive games – Theo got the better of Arthur with the white pieces and Lewis wrapped things up with a win against Eve.

Quarter final pairings
So now we move on to the knockout stages of the 2025 Championship! Below are the pairings for the quarterfinals to be played on Tuesday 11th.
Knockout stage rules
- Players with the black pieces are highlighted with the black pawn icon. A coin toss decided the colours for the first board then this was applied to all boards. Adult and Junior sections were allocated with separate coin tosses, hence the differences.
- Time control will be 1 hour per player with no increment.
- If a player is unable to attend on the evening then a win will be awarded to the opponent.
- In the event of the draw players will play again, alternating colours.
- In the event of two draws players will play a third game under a rapid time control. If the third game is drawn the colours will alternate again in the 4th. 5th game will be under Armageddon time control of 6 minutes for White and 5 minutes for Black. In a chess Armageddon, the time control is set so White has more time than Black, but Black wins the match in the event of a draw.
- The first player to win a game goes forward to the next round and the losing player is eliminated from the 2025 Championship.
